C. 6.

APR 80
Sir,
No. 5.
Sir J. Pauncefote to Mr. Lungen.
Foreign Office, April 10, 1886.
I AM directed by the Earl of Rosebery to acknowledge the receipt of your letter of the 7th January, having reference to the loss of the British schooner "Lilla" on one of the Pelew Islands in 1880, and inquiring whether it will be possible for you to obtain compensation from the Spanish Government for the loss sustained by the plundering of the vessel by natives.
In reply, I am to inform you that the claims in connection with the "Lilla" were investigated and settled in the years 1881 and 1882, that Her Majesty's Government must consider the matter closed, and cannot take any further action in the case.
I am, &c.
(Signed) JULIAN PAUNCEFOTE.
